What Is FSC Certified Packaging and Why Does It Matter for Your Brand?
Sustainability is no longer a differentiator in packaging. It is an expectation. Consumers, retailers and regulators are all asking the same question of the brands they buy from, stock and approve, where did this packaging come from, and was it produced responsibly?
FSC certification is the most credible, globally recognised answer to that question. This guide explains exactly what FSC certified packaging is, what the certification process involves, why it matters commercially, and how to verify that your packaging manufacturer holds a legitimate FSC certificate.
What Does FSC Stand For?
FSC stands for the Forest Stewardship Council, an independent, international non-profit organisation that sets the global standard for responsible forest management. Founded in 1993, the FSC operates in over 80 countries and is widely regarded as the most rigorous and credible forest certification system in the world.
When a product carries the FSC label, it means the materials used to produce it have been traced through a verified chain of custody, from a responsibly managed forest, through every stage of processing and manufacturing, to the finished product in your hands.
What Is FSC Certified Packaging?
FSC certified packaging is packaging produced using paper, board or other forest-derived materials that have been sourced from FSC-certified forests and verified through an FSC-accredited Chain of Custody certification process. There are three FSC product labels:
FSC 100%
All wood-based materials in the product come from FSC-certified forests. This is the highest standard, every fibre in the packaging is fully traceable to a responsibly managed source.
FSC Mix
The product contains a mixture of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials and/or FSC Controlled Wood. This is the most commonly used label in commercial packaging production.
FSC Recycled
All wood-based materials in the product are made from reclaimed or recycled material. This label supports the circular economy by diverting material from landfill and reducing demand for virgin forest resources.
All three labels are legitimate FSC certifications, the right choice for your brand depends on your sustainability goals, your product category and your target market.
What Is FSC Chain of Custody Certification?
Chain of Custody (CoC) certification is the mechanism that makes FSC claims credible. It tracks FSC-certified material through every stage of the supply chain, from the forest to the sawmill, from the paper mill to the printer, from the manufacturer to the brand.
Every business in the supply chain that handles FSC-certified material must hold its own Chain of Custody certificate. This means that when you source packaging from an FSC-certified manufacturer, you can be confident that the certification claim is backed by an unbroken, independently audited chain of verification, not just a label printed on a box.

Xactz holds FSC Chain of Custody certification issued by SGS Hong Kong Limited, one of the world's leading inspection, verification and certification bodies. The certificate (SGSHK-COC-332603 / CN25/00008559) covers the purchasing of FSC 100%, FSC Mix and FSC Recycled paper and paperboard, manufacturing and sales of FSC-certified paper products. It is valid from 15 December 2025 until 14 December 2030 and can be independently verified at search.fsc.org.
Why FSC Certified Packaging Matters for Your Brand
It Meets Growing Regulatory Requirements
Environmental regulations governing packaging materials are tightening globally. The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which came into force in 2023, requires brands selling into EU markets to demonstrate that their products have not contributed to deforestation. FSC certification provides exactly the supply chain traceability that regulators are demanding.
For brands selling into the EU, UK, US and other regulated markets, FSC certification is increasingly not optional, it is a compliance requirement that your packaging manufacturer must be able to support.
It Responds to Consumer Demand
Consumer awareness of packaging sustainability has never been higher. Studies consistently show that a significant majority of consumers, particularly in the 25–45 age bracket, actively prefer brands that demonstrate environmental responsibility. The FSC label is one of the most recognised sustainability marks in the world, with high consumer awareness across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
Brands that carry the FSC label on their packaging are communicating a verifiable commitment to sustainability, not just a marketing claim. In a market where greenwashing is increasingly scrutinised, the difference between a verified certification and an unsubstantiated claim is significant.
It Protects Forests and Biodiversity
FSC-certified forests are managed to strict environmental and social standards that protect biodiversity, water quality, indigenous rights and the long-term health of forest ecosystems. By sourcing FSC-certified packaging, your brand is actively contributing to the preservation of the world's forests, not simply avoiding the worst practices.
The FSC standard prohibits the conversion of natural forests to plantations, the use of highly hazardous pesticides, and violations of indigenous peoples' rights. These are not aspirational guidelines, they are enforceable certification requirements.
It Strengthens Retailer and B2B Relationships
Major global retailers, including many of the world's largest supermarket chains, department stores and e-commerce platforms, have their own packaging sustainability requirements that suppliers must meet. FSC certification is frequently listed as a mandatory or preferred requirement in retailer supplier codes of conduct.
For brands seeking to enter or expand within premium retail channels, FSC certified packaging is a commercial enabler, it removes a barrier to listing and demonstrates supply chain credibility to retail buyers.
How to Verify Your Manufacturer's FSC Certificate
Not all FSC claims are equal. The FSC label can only be legitimately applied to products by manufacturers holding a valid, current Chain of Custody certificate. Before sourcing packaging from any manufacturer on the basis of an FSC claim, verify the following:
- Check the certificate number.
Every legitimate FSC certificate has a unique certificate number. Ask your manufacturer for their certificate number and verify it independently at search.fsc.org.
- Check the certificate scope.
The certificate scope defines exactly which products and processes are covered. A manufacturer may hold FSC certification for some products but not others, confirm that your specific packaging type falls within the certified scope.
- Check the validity date.
FSC certificates expire and must be renewed through ongoing surveillance audits. Confirm that the certificate is current and has not lapsed.
- Check the certifying body.
FSC certificates are issued by accredited certification bodies, such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, or Rainforest Alliance. A certificate issued by an unrecognised body is not a valid FSC certification.

Xactz's FSC Chain of Custody certificate is issued by SGS Hong Kong Limited, valid until 14 December 2030, and fully verifiable at search.fsc.org under certificate number SGSHK-COC-332603. Every order produced by Xactz under FSC-certified scope is documented on sales and delivery paperwork, providing the complete chain of custody traceability your brand requires.
FSC Certification and Luxury Packaging, Not a Contradiction
One of the most persistent misconceptions in premium packaging is that sustainability and luxury are in tension, that FSC-certified materials compromise finish quality, tactile experience or visual impact.
This is simply not true. FSC-certified papers and boards are available across the full spectrum of packaging grades, from standard folding carton board to the highest-quality specialty papers used in luxury rigid box construction. Every finish described in our packaging finishes guide, foil stamping, embossing, soft-touch lamination, spot UV, is fully compatible with FSC-certified materials.
Sustainability and luxury are not opposites. The most credible luxury brands in the world understand that responsible sourcing is part of what makes a product genuinely premium, not a compromise of it.
